Consumerism

consumerism

Our insatiable demand for “stuff” is simply unviable; the planet cannot sustain our growing population unless we all exercise restraint.

This isn’t about our growing population – although that is a factor – but about recognising that if we all continue to consume as much as we do, the planet cannot provide much longer.

The consequences of our consumer-driven society are being felt in all areas of environmental concern – climate, plastic, waste, biodiversity loss and so on.

Developed western nations have been consuming far too much for too long, and developing nations are now heading in the same direction. However, we all need to learn from the mistakes of the past. We need to buy less, buy sustainable materials, reuse and repair, recycle more, and limit the consumption of rare resources to where they are absolutely essential.
