Environment policy

Action: Adopt a family “Environment Policy”

You’ll often hear about businesses large and small having to have written policies about everything! This will often include an Environment Policy. Well for this action, please think about writing an Environment Policy for your family, or a group of friends?

Also, if you are working in a small organisation, why not challenge your boss to get a policy in place?

If you are in a class at school, why not challenge the group, or the whole school, about their policy?

Your policy can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. The important thing is that you get “buy-in”; by that we mean the commitment you need from people to stick to whatever it is that you agree. Although you could go into detail, for a family you are probably going to be best keeping it simple to start with. That way, it’s clear what the policy rules are, and everyone will find it easier to adhere to it.

Well it doesn’t need to be daunting – you can use our example one-page simple Family Environmental Policy (a PDF).

You can download it (click on the image) and use it as it is, or as the basis for something you might tailor to suit your group. It will give you a good idea of how to lay it out, what sort of things to include.

Maybe you could think about adding penalties if someone doesn’t stick to the policy!

You could even get everyone to sign it, adding a little bit of formality and so encouraging people to take it seriously.
